Learn to Surf

The Surfing Gooroo Web Site is designed to pass on surfing experience and knowledge to learner surfers and to help them become the best surfers they can be!

By doing this, the Surfing Gooroo hopes to help address some serious problems facing surfing today.

Over the years the popularity of surfing has increased dramatically and we are now seeing a new type of person learning to surf. They are people who have not grown up near a beach, have no support network at the beach, and have almost zero understanding of the ocean. As a result we now have a major problem. For the first time in surfing history we find ourselves in a dangerous situation. We now have highly concentrated crowds, with a low median level of surfing experience, and, in the case of tourists and backpackers on hire boards, often zero experience.

Learner surfers, have come to be resented for getting in the way, dinging other surfer's boards and causing dangerous accidents. Sadly this resentment results in the knowledge once freely given to learners in the past, no longer being passed on. Without this knowledge, the newcomer to surfing doesn't know where to be and what to do, and so we have entered a self perpetuating, dysfunctional cycle.

The inability of learners to find a good, trusted source of learn to surf information is not a good situation for either learners or experienced surfers and the resulting frustrations, accidents, abuse and fights in the water only serve to devalue the surfing experience and make it less enjoyable for everyone.

The Surfing Gooroo has been specifically designed to provide learner surfers with the critical knowledge that was once freely passed from one surfer to the next.
